FCLT News Bytes
Welcome to the new blog: FCLT News Bytes, where we'll share "byte"-sized news, updates, and information to help you find resources, learn Canvas, improve course design, and discover tools and features you may want to know about!
You can subscribe directly to our blog (top center) to get email notifications sent directly to you or find our blog posts in POD email updates and in the Mt. SAC Canvas Faculty Center. What is the Faculty Center, you ask? If you haven't joined, please do! We provide a wealth of useful local content her.
What (and Who) is the FCLT?
By now, most of you know that FCLT stands for Faculty Center for Learning Technology. Our unit's purpose is to provide instructional design and distance learning services to all faculty (full-time/part-time, credit/ noncredit) in all course types (online, hybrid, face-to-face). We can assist you with the use of technology such as Canvas and the tools that integrate or embed within it.

Our Instructional Designers can help you understand how to bring together best practices for designing a course, including principles of good pedagogy and learning science, and combine those with design and technical know-how to realize your vision for a course that is well-built, engaging to students, clear to navigate, and compliant with applicable regulations.
Distance Learning Team

Assistant Distance Learning Coordinators support you in completing SPOT (Skills and Pedagogy for Online Teaching, Mt. SAC's training requirement to teach distance learning courses). They can assist with general questions related to distance education requirements and offer SPOT Office Hours.
What the FCLT Is (And Isn't)
The FCLT is a dedicated resource for Mt. SAC's professors. We help you use technology well for teaching and inform you of Canvas functionality, tools, services and information about the requirements to teach online at Mt. SAC.
Our main purpose is to develop training and resources in many formats to facilitate professors' use of learning technology so that you can discover the principles and tools to design your courses for student success.
We have FCLT Office Hours weekly when classes are in session all year round. We also offer a selection of live workshops and training including self-paced workshops and a variety of Canvas guides and other resource documents to answer many common questions and allow you to learn with us or on your own.
We try to be responsive to emails and we offer individual appointments based on our availability. Please note that we do not have the capacity to function as a help desk nor is our unit's mission to function as one. We work during the regular business hours of the college and are not staffed to offer "rapid response" services for urgent problems.
Before reaching out to us by phone, email, or for an individual appointment, we encourage faculty to first check for answers to common questions about Canvas functionality in the Canvas Guides and the Canvas Community. You can find a lot of useful local information as well info on the tools and services available to faculty at Mt. SAC in the Canvas Faculty Center and the FCLT website. Even Googling your question can often get you to the information you need when the question is a standard "how do I" about using Canvas.
